Why Simple Cameras Deliver Big Results
As a professional videographer, I rely on a wide range of cameras — from high-end full-frame systems to compact drones and action cams. My larger cameras are the backbone of most shoots, but some of my favorite footage has come from the smallest, least expensive gear in my kit.
Can you spot the scenes filmed with inexpensive cameras?
Why? Versatility.
Action cams and drones can go where bigger cameras can’t. They capture angles that feel fresh and unexpected — a drone soaring over a crowd, a small camera tucked into tight spaces, or gear mounted where a traditional rig would never fit. These perspectives often add production value far beyond their modest price tag.
Of course, these cameras come with limitations: weaker low-light performance, fewer manual controls, and smaller dynamic range. But in skilled hands, those limitations become challenges to work around rather than barriers. With the right planning and conditions, even budget-friendly tools can produce footage that rivals high-end systems.
The real strength comes from knowing which tool to use, when to use it, and how to use it effectively. A well-placed action cam or drone can capture moments that would otherwise be impossible — and sometimes those shots become the most memorable of a project.
