The Creative Power of 4K at 120 fps

Opening shot is a great example of 120 frames per second

Having the flexibility to shoot in 4K from 24 fps all the way up to 120 fps gives a project remarkable versatility. Each frame rate has its place, but when used intentionally, filming at 120 fps can add an artistic edge that elevates a production.

The most obvious advantage is slow motion. At 120 fps, everyday moments become dramatic and cinematic — whether it’s a chef plating food, a product being assembled, or machinery in motion. The added detail and clarity not only highlight the subject but can also create a sense of luxury and artistry in the final video.

Beyond slow motion, high frame rates give directors more control over pacing. A fast-moving scene can be stretched for emphasis, or a simple action can be slowed to add weight and impact. Used thoughtfully, it’s a tool that enhances storytelling and keeps viewers engaged.

Of course, 120 fps isn’t the right choice for every scenario. It requires more data, longer edit times, and doesn’t always add value. That’s why, on set, I often discuss the pros and cons with clients and, in some cases, shoot a scene both ways so the decision can be made in the edit. Having the option ensures flexibility — and sometimes it’s that flexibility that makes a production stand out.
